CHAPTER 2: TRAVEL AND ADVENTURES

ENGLISH SUBJECT:

(GUIDANCE CORNER)

"Kina Balu from Pinokok Valley" - lithograph published in 1862

The highest mountain in Southeast Asia that is 4,101 metres (13,455 ft) from the sea level.

Tales

There are two stories that led to the main beliefs in the origin of the mountain's name.

1)The first derivation of the word Kinabalu is extracted from the short form for the Kadazan Dusun word 'Aki Nabalu', meaning "the revered place of the dead".

2)The second source states that the name "Kinabalu" actually means "Cina Balu" (which would fully mean "A Chinese Widow"). Due to the lingual influence among the Kadazan Dusun of Sabah, the pronunciation for the word "cina" (chee-na) was changed to "Kina" (kee-na).
It was told that a Chinese prince, was cast away to Borneo when his ship sank in the middle of the South China Sea. He was subsequently rescued by the natives from a nearby village. As he recovered, he was slowly accepted as one of the people of the village. Eventually, he fell in love with a local woman, and married her. Years went by, and he started to feel homesick. So he asked permission from his newly-found family to go back to China to visit his parents (the Emperor and Empress of China). To his wife, he promised that as soon as he was done with his family duties in China, he would come back to Borneo to take her and their children back to China.
When he made his return to China, he was given a grand welcome by his family. However, to his dismay, his parents disagreed with him about taking his Bornean wife back to China. Worse, they told him that he was already betrothed to a princess of a neighbouring kingdom. Having no choice (due to high respect towards his parents), he obeyed with a heavy heart.
Meanwhile, back in Borneo, his wife grew more and more anxious. Eventually, she decided that she will wait for her husband's ship. However, since the village was situated far away from the coast, she couldn't afford to come to the shore and wait for him daily. Instead she decided to climb to the top of the highest mountain near her village, so that she could have a better view of the ships sailing in the South China Sea. Thus, she was then seen climbing up the mountain at every sunrise, returning only at night to attend to her growing children.
Eventually her efforts took their toll. She fell ill, and died at the top of the cold mountain while waiting for her husband. The spirit of the mountain, having observed her for years, was extremely touched by her loyalty towards her husband. Out of admiration for this woman, the spirit of the mountain turned her into a stone. Her face was made to face the South China Sea, so that she could wait forever for her dear husband's return.
The people in her hometown who heard about this were also gravely touched by this. Thus, they decided to name the mountain "Kinabalu" in remembrance of her. To them, the mountain is a symbol of the everlasting love and loyalty that should be taken as a good example by women.
Local legend among the people of Ranau, a district in Sabah, has it that St. John's Peak was the stone which her body was turned into.

JUNGLE TRACKING TO GUNUNG RAYA

On 18th of December 2009, I and my family went to Gunung Raya through Tangga Helang Seribu Kenangan.
Gunung Raya is the highest peak in Langkawi Island
......Everybody is concentrating on the briefing given by our GM (my father).

The starting point at Lubuk Sembilang......
Everybody was so energetic and full with positive mind.."We Can Do It !!!"

What a beautiful morning~"~

About 4,212 steps of Tangga Helang Seribu Kenangan.

........Still a long way to the peak!

The significant building.....at the peak of Gunung Raya.

What a beautiful scenery and the weather was so chilly. We could not see things clearly due to the fog around us.

ALHAMDULILLAH.
All the praise to The Mighty God.

At last....All of us were on the peak of Gunung Raya.

BRAVO!!....BRAVO.....!!!

Surrounded by my big brothers...
Geng Of Red!!

Gunung Raya is our family favourite place.
This was not my first time reaching the peak.
Since I was small...I think...
many times already.

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF HOME SCHOOLING?

(GUIDANCE CORNER)
  1.  Your children will become much closer and form lasting bonds with their parents and siblings.

  2. It is usually much more efficient than public schools because schedules can be more flexible and tailored to complement the individual needs and activities of your child and the home.

  3. Costs of home schooling are much cheaper than paying for public education with all its "hidden" extras.

  4. You, the parent, have greater, if not full, control of your child's curriculum and textbooks that will be used to study from. This is important if you hope to screen out "secular humanism" (Man is God philosophy) and "evolutionary" atheistic doctrines from your child's training.

  5. You get to save money on daily travelling expenses to school, board, fees, etc. This money can be put towards building a better life for your child.

  6. Another benefit of home schooling seldom thought about but equally important is the fact that your child has much more freedom: Freedom from fear, freedom from failing, freedom to go at one's own pace.

  7. An important benefit of home schooling is that it builds self-esteem and leads to improved academic performance. Your kids will likely be well ahead of their public school counterparts.

  8. School can actually be fun again.

  9. It only takes a few hours a day. It's efficient! You will save time.

  10. Home education allows you, the parent, to customize the curriculum to meet the needs of your child.

  11. Another benefit of home schooling is that it can start and stop at any time, and is totally flexible and accommodating to the needs of your family unit. Travel, recreational, and educational opportunities are easy to take advantage of when they occur

MICROORGANISMS

I learnt about bacteria, protozoa, fungi and yeast. What fascinated me the most was the yeast. My mother said that lots of thing we can do with yeast. I have a plan to make tapai oneday. Yummy....tapai pulut is my favourite. My mother also said that tapioca also can be make a tapai. This is something new to me because I never eat it.

MY UPSIDE DOWN BONSAI AND HOW TO MAKE A BONSAI POT

MY UPSIDE DOWN MANGROVE BONSAI

On 25 Nov 2009, I tried this new technique that I called it UPSIDE DOWN BONSAI!
This is my mangrove bonsai tree. I took the mangrove seedling from my backyard and planted it in the small pot about 6 months ago. Instead of plant it in an ordinary technique, I purposely hang it upside down. Surprisingly, the seedling survived even without sea water. So far the mangrove experiment is showing a good sign. I plan to commercialize it to bonsai lovers who leave far from the sea!

My upside down mangrove bonsai

HOW TO MAKE A BONSAI POT

Since we plant many bonsai trees, we need lots of bonsai pots.
Making bonsai pot is not easy.
We must have a good technique in order to make a good bonsai pot.
Making bonsai pot is fun.
I bet you..Homeschooling is really interesting...!
Learning something that really put you in the real world.
How about selling them ONLINE! Good idea.

You have to shape your own desire size and design of bonsai pot with a mixture of sand and clay so that it can hold a shape. I just did it with my own hand. After that just put on it a mixture of cement with water. The layer must be about one inch thick so that the pot is not easily break. Add extra cement for the legs of the pot as you wish. On the left of the photo is the pot that I just put the cement on the shaped sand and on the right is the one that already ready to remove the sand. I made the pot two days ago. You should give the time for the cement to really harden before you start to remove the sand.

Removing the sand from the bonsai pot.

The finished product

Well...Instead of buying those expensive pots of bonsai, we can just
make them by ourselves. You can paint the pot with
your favourite colour or just leave it just that.

LEARNING TO MAKE BIG BONSAI TREE DURING JUNGLE TRACKING WITH MY FAMILY

This jungle tracking happened  in 2005. I was six years old and still small to be called a bonsai player. My dad exposed me to this world of bonsai at the early stage. At this early years I just input all the knowledge around me...and doing nothing.

All my brothers did the hard work and I just became the "boss" who
observed them very carefully.

Wow..It is really a big tree. It took us the whole day in the jungle to dig the tree and moved it to the roadside. This is the biggest bonsai I ever see.

AT MY BACKYARD, THE WATER IS SO BLUE AND THE AIR IS SO FRESH.

I love sea very much.
I am very fortunate to have a house near the sea (actually in the sea when the tide is high)
I am quite good in swimming and diving but still amateur level.
Indeed, sea is my big classroom and nature is my teacher.
My family is my great teacher.
I learn with my dad, my mother and my siblings.

Enjoy the life to the fullest.....

My village's name is Kampung Bakau. The village got its name after this beautiful
mangrove tree ( Pokok Bakau). The nearest boat is ours. I called it "Adventure".

ISLAND HOPPING WITH MY FAMILY IN THE WEEK-END.
WE ARE BONSAI HUNTER.

"Adventure" at Tuba Island, the second largest after Langkawi. Actually there are
99 islands altogether. With "Adventure" we traveled from one island
to the other to collect bonsai. We also do lots of fishing
and diving in a deep sea. What a wonderful life...
All the praise to Allah.
